The Original Globe:Back in 1993, when the first wave of post-revolution expatriate life was at its height, 5 Americans opened the original Globe in Prague’s Holesovice district, hoping to bring a little San Francisco style coffeehouse atmosphere to the city. After reconstructing a Communist-era laundry mat, Globe opened it’s doors in July with the motto: “..in libris veritas; in kava vita.” Emerging writers and poets (as well as those more established) have rubbed shoulders at the Globe. William Styron, Jachym Topol, Richard Ford, Ivan Klima, Amy Tam, Ludvik Vaculik, Richard Ford, Julian Barns, P.J. O’Rourke and Gore Vidal all visited us over the years. Even Alan Ginsberg came to visit, although he bashed our poetry section for its “lack of edge”. The Globe became a natural venue for interesting cultural events, and we’ve always enjoyed hosting a good reading, discussion, art show, an evening of live music or a lingering chess game. In 2000, two of the original owners relocated the store to the current Prague 1 address. A beautiful space, built in 1895, it was Café Olympia, followed by the reign of a Chef of an elementary school cafeteria until 1992, then misused as a storehouse.
